Today, Xiaomi is known as one of the most well-known smartphone manufacturers, and its value for money has expanded significantly in many markets around the world. However, what is not well known about the Chinese company is that the first product was not a smartphone, but MIUI, the software that runs on most mobile phones today.

A lot has changed between then and now and MIUI is no longer a custom ROM. Google Nexus One. It’s a full-fledged skin on millions of devices and one of the richest features. Experience with MIUI 12 on multiple phones can prove this.

So, if you have a handset with MIUI 12 or just wondering what the software has to offer, here are 10 features you must know.

Share images without metadata

Gallery> (3 dots)> Settings> Secure sharing

If you’ve taught us something over the years, any of us could fall victim to an unexpected data breach. Most of us are unaware of this, but they give us a lot of information (location, etc.) with images we share on social media. Fortunately, MIUI 12 has the ability to share images without location and metadata. What a neat!

Sound assistant

Settings> Sound & Vibration> Sound Assistant

Android isn’t particularly smart about media volume in that it doesn’t adjust automatically depending on the app you’re using. Thankfully you can do this with MIUI’s Sound Assistant. For example, you can turn down the volume on Facebook while playing music in the background at a higher volume. It’s a really neat feature and I’m surprised more OEMs haven’t thought about it.

Second space

Settings> Special Functions> Second Space

Many of us don’t use separate phones for work, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed when trying to have a good time with family or friends. Second Space allows you to use MIUI 12 to create completely separate areas (literally “second space”) within your phone, so you can get rid of some of the noise. You can get your apps and data from the first space, but the Second Space is a blank slate that you can set up for work apps only. The best thing about this feature is that you can assign a lock code/fingerprint to each space and jump to the space you want right from the lock screen.

Google Home integration in Control Center

Settings> Notification & Control Center> Smart Home

While it is convenient to control your smart device with the Google Assistant, there are times when it is more convenient to access it quickly from the screen. This is exactly what MIUI provides. Google Home integration is possible right from the Control Center. You can also customize the order of compatible devices and choose which devices to display.

Image blur tool

This is one of the more useful features than it sounds. We take a lot of screenshots every day and not all of the information in it is suitable for sharing. MIUI has a built-in blur tool that you can access when taking screenshots. Not only can you choose a blur pattern, you can also change the brush size.

Game turbo

Settings> Special Features> Game Turbo

For many of us, smartphones are the only consoles we own, and MIUI’s Game Turbo can really enhance your gaming experience. Not only does it allow you to optimize the settings for each game in advance, but it also offers a variety of features that you can access while playing. Some notable include browser access, voice changer, screen recording and transfer. You can also free up resources by deleting background processes with a single tap.

Reading mode

Settings> Display> Reading Mode

Let’s face it. Whether it’s a thread on Twitter or an article on the web, we read a lot on our smartphones and that’s not good news in our eyes. While reading mode doesn’t significantly improve the experience, it reduces blue light, uses warm colors, and adds a paper-like texture to make it a bit more readable. You can also configure it to switch automatically.

Dual app

Settings> Apps> Dual App

There are many third party tools that can run two instances of the same app, but the implementation of MIUI 12 is simple and works well. You can use this feature to make a copy of an app like WhatsApp that doesn’t support multiple accounts. Duplicate apps are sandboxed so they don’t interfere with the original.

Video tool box

Settings> Special Features> Video Toolbox

The video toolbox isn’t new in MIUI 12, but it’s one of the most underrated features of the Xiaomi skin. While using an app like YouTube, you can use the toolbox to adjust the video and audio output. More importantly, you can play the sound of these apps even when the screen is off. This can be useful if you want to watch YouTube videos without unlocking the screen. YouTube Premium feature).

Floating window

Settings> Special Functions> Floating Window

Android has its own multitasking features, but MIUI 12 takes it a step further with floating windows. Long press on the banner notification and swipe down to quickly open the app in a floating window. These floating windows can be minimized, expanded, and closed with a simple gesture. You don’t need to quit the app you’re currently using to access other apps.
