A giant manta ray jumped out of the ocean and photobombed a surfer

Rusty Escandell told CNN he took the picture on Sunday as he spent the day with family and friends on a beach near the beach at the Patrick Space Base Officer’s Club, but did not notice. until he got home.

“I saw a little one behind the surfer, but I didn’t think about it much,” he said. “It could have been a fish, it could have been anything.”

Escandell had taken a series of photos showing the jet coming out of the water.

“It was pretty amazing,” he said.

Her daughter and boyfriend are marine biologists and said they had seen some blanket rays in the water after taking the photo, Escandell said.

Escandell owns a car repair shop and lives on nearby Satellite Beach and said he enjoys taking pictures on the beach fairly regularly.

I didn’t know the surfer in the photo, but they’ve been talking since the photo went viral.

“He’s excited too,” Escandell said.

They are giant blanket rays the largest rays in the world and can grow to a wingspan of up to 29 feet.
Slow-moving migratory fish are classified as threatened in the area U.S. Endangered Species Act and in danger of extinction IUCN Red List.
“Their populations are declining around the world,” said Jessica Pate, a senior scientist at the Marine Megafauna Foundation.

Pate told CNN that about 50 people have sent him the photo of Escandell in recent days.

He has just begun to study why in the spring adult blanket rays from central and northern Florida are added.

On Sunday, he saw 64 adult giant blankets while conducting an aerial study of the area between Sebastian and Daytona Beach, which includes Satellite Beach.

“I’m not sure what exactly leads to this big aggregation. It could be for mating, for feeding, for both of us. But that’s what we’re going to do a study to find out,” Pate said.

He said it’s also not known why giant manta rays break or jump out of the water, it could be a mating ritual, trying to ward off parasites, or a way to communicate because it makes a loud sound.
