The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists obesity as an underlying disease, and defines him as a person who has a body mass index equal to or greater than 30 but less than 40. However, having a high BMI does not necessarily mean that he is ill.
Assessing BMI is a quick, dirty way to indirectly measure how much fat your body has. The CDC has created a calculator for both children i adults to find your number.

For adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is in the normal range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or more is obese. A BMI of 40 or higher is sometimes classified as “extreme” or “severe,” obesity, the CDC notes.

Having a BMI above 30 can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, said Dr. Rosen Clifford, director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at the Maine Medical Center Research Center.

Obesity also increases the risk of having a more severe reaction to Covid-19, he said.

There are some rare cases where a healthy person reports an unhealthy BMI number, according to Clifford. Weight trainers and people with athletic exercise have a lot of muscles, which could create a high number of BMIs, said Dr. Caroline Apovian, director of nutrition and weight control at Boston Medical Center and professor of medicine and pediatrics at the Medicine.

“A lot of football players have a BMI of 30, 35 or even 40, but they’re all muscles, so they’re extremely healthy,” Apovian said.

If you’re not sure if your high BMI is due to fat or muscle, Apovian recommended that you consult a weight loss specialist for more specific tests.

How to reduce the number of BMI

It is possible to reduce BMI through diet and exercise, Clifford said.

The first step is to understand that it is not your fault, he pointed out, and take responsibility for your body.

Tell yourself, “I don’t know what caused this, but I’ll do something about it,” he said.

Clifford has stressed that dietary alteration is an important step in the weight loss process. People should limit the amount of processed foods they consume and replace them with whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Conscious eating is another way to lose weight, said Dr. Robert Kushner, a professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. This is where people slow down when they eat and enjoy the food in front of them.

“It’s slowing down, putting the fork … planning what you eat in advance and knowing the portion sizes,” Kushner said.

According to the study, more than one in 5 health workers experience depression and anxiety during the pandemic

People should not lose 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day without the permission of a weight loss specialist.

If you overeat, Apovion recommends that you create a moderate calorie deficit to lower your BMI. People should start losing between 1 and 2 pounds a week, which shows that your efforts are paying off.

The next step in reducing BMI is to exercise.

About 150 minutes of exercise a week, which is broken down to about 20 minutes of exercise a day, is a good way to lower body weight, Clifford said.

Apovian also recommended a weight training at least twice a week, as it can build muscle, which helps burn fat.

Walk out of the house, do virtual workouts, and go to the gym when it’s safe, Clifford suggested.

For more extreme cases or general help, he stressed that it is important to consult a weight loss specialist.
