Aguero’s contract with Manchester City expires at the end of the season, and without extension negotiations, it is increasingly likely that he will end his ten-year stay at the Etihad.
Reports from Spain claim that Barcelona is now concluding a two-year contract for the Argentine because of which he would move to Camp Nou as soon as his contract expires.
It is suggested that the newly appointed president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, was in contact with the 32-year-old, as he is trying to strengthen his side on the eve of the new season.
Manchester City defender Eric Garcia has also been invited to join Barcelona at the end of the season. If Sergio Aguero followed in his footsteps, he would connect with a close friend and compatriot Lionel Messi.
Pep Guardiola hints at extending Aguero’s contract amid Barcelona’s ties
Aguero has been out of Manchester City for most of this season, after coming out with several injuries.
The Argentine scored his first goal of the season in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
His last goal in the Premier League was scored a year ago when he scored the only goal that gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in January 2020.
Since his future at the Etihad seems unlikely, he has been linked with several top clubs, including Barcelona, along with a sensational return to Atletico Madrid, where he spent five years before moving to Manchester City.
However, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed that he would like Aguero to stay at the Etihad.
“As a man and as a person – even as a player, of course [I’d like him to stay]. But we have to see what happens at the end of the season.
“We can’t forget how long he was out. It started to get better.
“I know it takes him minutes to get to his best, but we didn’t [able] to give him minutes [purely] a few minutes because it’s an important part of the season.
“We have to be calm, the club will talk to his agent to know the situation and we will talk at the end of the season. It’s the same with Fernandinho “, said the head of Manchester City mirror.
However, as Aguero is now behind Gabriel Jesus ’free-kick in the club’s key striker line-up, he will be tempted to move to Barcelona, which currently has a center-forward crisis.
Since moving to Manchester City in 2011, Aguero has won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup on his way to becoming the club’s top scorer of all time with 257 goals.
