Beijing accuses US of treating China as “imaginary enemy” at top diplomat meeting

Sherman arrived in the northern city of Tianjin on Sunday to meet with Xie and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi as part of what his office described as ongoing U.S. efforts to maintain sincere exchanges with Chinese officials to “promote U.S. interests and values and responsibly manage the relationship.”

The Chinese ministry’s statement, ahead of Sherman’s meeting with Wang, accused the United States of wanting to revive a “sense of national purpose” by orchestrating a “whole-of-government and all-society” campaign to demonize and suppress China. .

“The United States seems to demand cooperation when it wants something from China; to decouple, cut off supplies, block or sanction China when it thinks it has advantages; and to resort to conflict and confrontation at all costs,” Xie said in the statement. . .

It was also quoted that Xie said the United States was not “in a position to hold conferences in China on democracy and human rights,” noting the historic treatment of the U.S. to Native Americans and U.S. military action.

The US side has not yet issued a statement on the meeting.

The talks come more than three months after that of the countries Alaska faced meeting in March, during which diplomats from both sides publicly exchanged beards.

During that meeting, the first under the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, Chinese diplomats accused the U.S. delegation of being “condescending” in its tone, while a U.S. official said representatives of Beijing seemed “intent on staying.”

In the months since Alaska, the two countries have continued to clash on several fronts, with the US government being highly critical of China’s policies in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. On Friday, China announced new sanctions against seven U.S. officials, including former Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, and entities in response to U.S. sanctions against several Hong Kong government officials, according to the U.S. Foreign Ministry. China.

Speaking to CNN, Willy Lam, an adjunct professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a longtime analyst of Chinese politics, described the relationship between China and the United States as a “historic low.”

Therefore, talks like Sherman and Wang are aimed at preventing contradictory relationships from getting worse in direct conflict, Lam said. “Sherman said he wants to build railings and parameters. So that conflicts can be dealt with through negotiations and not through direct confrontations and conflicts,” Lam said.

“If negotiations go well, there could be the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Italy in October,” Lam said.

“However, the Chinese have previously rejected meetings between U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and the senior official of the Central Military Commission of China. The Chinese have also been lukewarm in establishing a hotline. Therefore, whether this is a top-level summit between Biden and Xi remains highly questionable, “Lam added.

Speaking ahead of his meeting with Sherman on Monday, Wang Yi told Hong Kong television station Phoenix TV that “no country is superior to others” and China will not accept any country to take that position.

“The United States has always pressured others with its own strengths in a condescending way, thinking they are superior to others,” Wang said Saturday. “But I want to tell the American side that no country is ever superior to others, and there should be none, and China will not accept any country that boasts of its superiority.”

Wang’s comments come in response to statements by a U.S. State Department spokesman during a briefing last Wednesday when he said Sherman would travel to China “from a position of strength.”

“If the United States today has not learned to live with other countries on an equal footing, it is our responsibility, along with the international community, to give the United States a good lesson in this regard,” Wang added.
