U.S. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo must resign if allegations of sexual misconduct against him are confirmed by an investigation.

New York state Attorney General Letitia James last week named a team of outside lawyers to lead an investigation into allegations that Cuomo harassed women through offensive, sexual harassment. indicating sexual or inappropriate physical contact, including unsolicited kissing.

Asked in an interview with ABC News if Cuomo should step down if the investigation finds that the allegations are true, Biden said: “Yes. I think he could also go to prosecution.”

Cuomo, a 63-year-old separated father with three daughters over the age of 20, denied any wrongdoing and vowed to cooperate with James’s office inquiry.

“A woman should be assumed to be lying and should not be scapegoed and victimized by her approach,” Biden said. “There should be an investigation to determine if what he said is true.”

Two U.S. senators in New York, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, last week urged Cuomo, a fellow Democrat, to resign, saying New Yorkers have “lost confidence”.

The state legislature said it would open an impeachment investigation into the allegations.
