Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) warns against boycotting the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
In a op-ed published by Fox News on Monday, Cruz argues that boycotting the Olympics is not the way to go when it comes to standing up to China and will only hurt the athletes themselves.
“Of course, they are training for the Olympics and Paralympics. And it is inconceivable that we will take away their right to compete next year in Beijing at the 2022 Winter Olympics,” Cruz wrote.
The senator explained that he hopes the International Olympic Committee will “make sense” and move the games out of China.
“As someone who has been twice sanctioned by the Chinese government, I am anxious that the IOC will ever give human rights abuses, free speech, crackdown on the ranks of the totalitarians who make up the Chinese Communist Party the honor of hosting of the Olympics at first, “Cruz added.
He said the United States had “tried this business boycott before, and it really failed.”
President Jimmy Carter instituted an Olympic boycott against the Soviet Union in 1980 and, as a result, nearly 500 American athletes could not compete in the games, Cruz said.
“The Carter boycott was terrible policy, and hurt athletes and no one else. Let Joe Biden imitate Jimmy Carter during the two months of his presidency, by suggesting another boycott could be on. table, ”Cruz said.
He insisted that the “worst thing” the United States can do to stand up to China is to “keep our athletes at home.”
Cruz even swiped at the Biden administration, “The floating idea of a boycott shows that the Biden administration has no strategy in China and, in their skepticism, they will use American athletes as pawns to look tough on China instead of being really tough on China. ”
He stressed that it is the country’s “responsibility” and “duty” to send American athletes to the Olympics.
“Athletes need to know that we are proud of them and their efforts,” Cruz continued. “The scars since 1980 have not healed quickly, and we cannot and should not cause the same wounds to this generation of American Olympians.”
In an op-ed for Fox News last month, Haley urged the Biden administration to boycott the Olympics, citing “China’s threats abroad and tyranny at home.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said reporters last month, “There is no final decision about that yet and of course we will seek guidance from the U.S. Olympic Committee.”
