Designer Virgil Abloh remembered at the 2021 Fashion Awards




Designers and celebrities paid tribute Virgil Abloh On Monday at the London Fashion Awards, where the creative force of Louis Vuitton and Off-White was honored as the leader of change within the industry.

Abloh, the American son of Ghanaian immigrants, who became the most prominent black fashion designer, died Sunday after a two-year battle with a rare form of cancer.

The 41-year-old, who also worked as a DJ and visual artist, had been artistic director of men’s clothing for the luxury label Louis Vuitton since March 2018.

“Genius, disruptor … (he) will be sorely missed by all,” veteran designer Tommy Hilfiger said on the red carpet. “It inspired both designers and the public.”

TV designer and personality Tan France described Abloh as “amazing and visionary … (who) has done the most beautiful job.”

Abloh, who founded the Off-White label, was known for mixing streetwear with high-end dresses and suits while on Vuitton. His influences included graffiti and hip hop.

“Everyone here will talk about Virgil, everyone has been affected by his brilliance,” actor Gabrielle Union said.

At the awards, where Abloh’s photo was projected on stage, the designer was among 15 individuals and brands named leaders of change for their actions over the past year helping the environment, people and creativity .

Others on the list include Balenciaga designer Demna Gvasalia, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele and Kim Jones, Fendi’s women’s and haute couture art director, as well as Dior’s men’s clothing designer. Jones was also named Designer of the Year at the awards.

Michele also won the Trailblazer Award, while Hilfiger received the Outstanding Achievement Award.

“I’m absolutely grateful, grateful, humiliated for it, but happy to be here and happy to continue with the business,” said Hilfiger, 70.

Demi Moore, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Dua Lipa were among the famous guests who attended the event, a fundraiser for British Fashion Council charities.
