Paul, who says he has been infected with coronavirus and who he refuses to put on a mask He attacked Fauci during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

“He’s telling everyone to wear a mask, whether they’ve had an infection or a vaccine,” Paul told Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “If people who have had the vaccine or have had the infection … if we’re not spreading the infection, isn’t it just theater?” Paul asked.

“Here we go back to the theater. Let’s get to the facts,” Fauci replied. “Let me make it clear that masks are not theater. Masks are protective.”

Fauci noted earlier that vaccinated people can still breathe viruses, have them live in their nose or throat without causing any infection, and breathe, cough, or sneeze infectious viruses. People can also become infected again after recovery, although it is uncommon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who have been vaccinated however, you should still wear masks when there are people who are not vaccinated.

“And it doesn’t stick to the concept of variants. This is a completely different ball game,” Fauci added.

“That’s a good reason for a mask.”

Asked about CNN’s Chris Cuomo exchange on “Rush hour“Thursday evening, Fauci said, ‘I don’t know what you think, to be honest with you.’

“I’ve been trying – it’s not the first time we’ve faced each other in a Senate hearing. You know, there’s always, as always, a core of truth in what he says about that. Protection to some extent after infecting- yes, there is no doubt, “Fauci continued.

“Does not completely consider variants”.

New variants of the virus, such as variant B.1.1.7 first seen in Britain and variant B.1.351 first seen in South Africa, are more widespread and may elude the immune response caused by a previous infection. Fauci told the audience that at least one study showed that people in South Africa who had been infected with older coronavirus strains had almost no immune protection against B.1.351.

“Don’t listen to what I say about the variants,” Fauci said during the hearing.

“You’ve been vaccinated and parade with two masks to show,” replied Paul, who is an ophthalmologist. “You want people to get vaccinated, give them a reward instead of telling them that babysitting will be there for three more years and you have to wear a mask forever. People don’t want to hear it.”

“I don’t totally agree with you,” Fauci said.

The nation’s top infectious disease expert said Thursday evening that his concern about Paul’s approach is that people should follow his initiative in not wearing a mask after becoming infected with the virus.

“If people listen to what you say, and you believe it, and you have an older person who has become infected and they decide, well, Rand Paul says,‘ We don’t wear a mask, ’they won’t,” Fauci said.

“They could get infected again and have problems,” he added. “So that’s what bothers me about this kind of exchange.”
