Ousmane Dembele a new contract should be signed in Barcelona after impressing at Camp Nou with this campaign, according to Mundo Deportivo. The potential deal comes just months after Dembele seemed on his way to moving oto makea Manchester United last summer.
In 2017, the Frenchman signed a contract for Barcelona in the amount of 125 million euros Dortmund. Dembele was brought in to replace Neymar, who traveled to Paris Saint-Germain the same summer, but really did not live up to expectations. Dembele spent just one season in Dortmund before signing for Barcelona after impressing at the German club by scoring 10 goals and providing an outstanding 20 assists.
Numerous injuries, however, hampered his progress and performances in Barcelona, resulting in the Spanish side having to spend over € 100 million on Philippe Coutinho and later Antoine Griezmann to replace Dembele. His injury plight worsened last season as Dembele managed just nine appearances in all competitions for Barcelona. This resulted in Barcelona becoming ready to cut their salaries for the French, and last season he had concrete offers from Manchester United and Liverpool.
The player turned down both offers, including another from Juventus in the January transfer window, insisting he was more interested in fighting for his place on the Barcelona team. His resilience and determination paid off as he enjoyed pure health, appearing 34 times in all competitions this season, the second largest since joining the Spanish giants.
Dembele is an integral part of Barcelona’s plans for the future
Dembele was an important part of Ronald Koeman’s plans in Barcelona this campaign, and even in the midst of club fights this season, he was among the few positives for the club.
The winger’s contract expires next year, but new club president Joan Laporta and manager Ronald Koeman are pushing for an extension of Dembele’s stay at the club.
Laporta was reinstated as president of Barcelona last week, but he has already spoken out loud about his admiration for the French international.
“I’m a big fan of Ousmane Dembele. He’s in a spectacular moment of form and he’s mentally strong, calm down. He’s one of those players you have to try to keep Barça for for years. I’ve always spoken in favor of Ousmane. You have to take care of great players, said Laporta in an interview.
