House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is willing to give Donald Trump one thing-his attempts to retaliate against his Democratic critics by secretly issuing subpoenas for communication records of select lawmakers who “go beyond Richard Nixon” on records of the president’s misconduct. .
Pelosi made the damn comparison in an interview with Dana Bash back then CNNayan State of the Union this morning.
“In terms of data mining, what Republicans have done, what the administration has done, the Department of Justice under the leadership of the former president, is beyond Richard Nixon,” the House Speaker told Bash .
The New York Times reported earlier this week that the Trump administration sent subpoenas to Apple in 2017 and 2018 seeking phone, messaging and email data from accounts belonging to at least two Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, as well as well as their family members and some congressional assistants in an attempt to discover who is leaking information they consider classified.
Sources in the newspaper said the subpoenas were targeted at at least two dozen people including the House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) who was a fierce critic of Donald Trump and who later served as impeachment manager at Trump’s first impeachment trial.
Speaker Pelosi found that the claims of former Attorneys General Jeff Session and William Barr that they were unaware of the seizure of data records were “beyond belief” and he believed Congress would be forced to testify. under oath to find the true story behind the unprecedented move of the Department of Justice under Trump.
“It’s about weakening the rule of law,” Pelosi said. “The Attorneys of General Barr and Sessions, at least two will say, that they know nothing about it, can’t believe it. So we have to have them swear to testify about it now,” Pelosi said.
When Bash asked Pelosi if he was willing to issue congressional subpoenas for Session, Barr, and former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein if they refuse to voluntarily testify before Congress, the House Speaker avoids the question, simply saying:
“We hope they’ll want to respect the rule of law.”
Pelosi described the former president’s Justice Department’s partisan targeting of Trump critics as “just another display of their rogue activity.”
