WWE is saddened to learn that Del Wilkes, known to WWE fans as Patriot, has passed away at the age of 59.
Before making a name for himself in the square circle, Wilkes was a standout player on the University of South Carolina football field, where he earned an award for being voted for by All Americans. Following his transition to sports and entertainment, Wilkes competed around the world before joining the WWE as Patriot in 1997.
A fast-growing superstar, Patriot proudly donned America’s red-white-blue in the midst of his rivalry with The Hart Foundation, leading to an unforgettable match against Bret Hart for the WWE title at In Your House: Ground Zero just two months after his debut at WWE.
