One of the more interesting awards that the National Basketball Association gives out every season is their Sixth Man of the Year Award, which is typically the best bench player of the season. As of this writing, Herro has appeared in 46 games and is averaging 20 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 0.6 steals on 42.7 percent from the floor, 37.4 percent from three, and 87.9 percent from the free-throw line. He is currently running away as the favorite as no other player is currently listed at better than +1600. However, I just don’t see it. Usually, players see an uptick in their numbers but Herro is sitting right at his career numbers but averaging four more points per game. This feels like a lot of what the MVP Award has become and just because the Miami Heat are playing extremely well, they must have the Sixth Man of the Year as well.
Patty Mills, Brooklyn Nets (+15000)
This is where the award gets a little fuzzy because there is no distinct definition of what you need to do to be in the running. However, point guard Patty Mills for the Brooklyn Nets has been playing extremely well and deserves a flier at these incredible odds. Remember that he was supposed to relieve point guard Kyrie Irving but Irving is still unavailable in Brooklyn home games due to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate in New York City. Shooting guard Joe Harris also suffered an ankle injury that has kept him out three months now with no timetable in sight so Mills has been essentially a starter.
Mills is playing well as he has played 57 games and is averaging 13.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.3 blocks, and 0.7 steals while shooting 42.2 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from distance, and 87 percent from the free-throw line. With the addition of shooting guard Seth Curry to the Nets, Mills should get some more open looks and improve his already high three-point percentage and continue to improve his numbers once Kevin Durant gets healthy. I’d definitely sprinkle a little something on him as his numbers should go up.
Kevin Love, Cleveland Cavaliers (+3000)
Veterans usually understand their role and power forward Kevin Love has understood that as he is in a great spot with All-Star caliber players around him with center Jarrett Allen and point guard Darius Garland. Love is playing decently well as he is shooting 42.6 percent overall, 39.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 85.4 percent from the charity stripe while averaging 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 0.3 steals in 50 games played thus far. He seems like someone who is capable of having a strong second half of the regular season on a young, contending team.
Conclusion
It seems to be a runaway for Tyler Herro to win this award but if this knee injury is significant and he continues to miss some games after the All-Star break, it could be a change in direction. I still believe Patty Mills is in the mix to win and at +15000 odds, it would really provide some value with just a few bucks on it. Sprinkle some on all three guys as they each have an interesting argument for the award.
