Barcelona also announced the free signing of Manchester City defender Eric Garcia, who has signed a contract until the end of the 2025/26 season. The club set the player’s purchase clause at a whopping 400 million euros ($ 489 million).

Purchase clauses they are prevalent in Spain and are a mandatory element of most Spanish contracts, according to sports lawyer Daniel Geey, although they do not necessarily reflect a player’s true market value.

“The player has to literally‘ buy ’his contract for the stipulated amount, although in practice it is the buying club who pays the amount through the player,” according to Geey.

Garcia, 20, was part of Barcelona’s famous academy from 2008 to 2017, when he joined Manchester City.

The Spaniard, who has been included in the squad for Euro 2020 in his country along with new teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Pedri, he made just 12 appearances at City last season.
