The best moveset for Pikachu in Pokemon Sword and Shield

The face of the Pokemon franchise, Pikachu, can surprise you with a very effective set in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Although Pikachu can always evolve in Raich, it doesn’t have to. Pikachu has a high base speed (90) and can make up for his small attack / special attack with a light ball. It is quite vital for Pikachu to get this item, if he is going to play a big role in the Pokemon team. Fortunately, this can be done using Cram-o-matic from the Isle of Armor DLC.

Pikachu also has a Gigantimax form that can use G-Max Volt Crash, which will paralyze both opponents. Pikachu can be a fast and powerful Pokemon with this move.

Pikachu is somewhat limited in the moving pool, but learns enough moves to be effective in many Pokemon sword and shield battles. The physical set is doable with the Volt Tackle, but it requires growing a Pikachu with a Light Ball, which can take time. This is a good set of movements that can work immediately on any Pikachu, although it really works better with Light Ball. If possible, it is better to get a Pikachu with static ability, because it can paralyze Pokemon on contact:

  • Thunderbolt
  • Rising Voltage
  • Surf
  • Nasty plot

Thunderbolt in most cases serves as Pikachu’s most damaging move. Especially with an equipped Light Ball ball, Thunderbolt will crush all non-earth type Pokemon. For those who catch Gigantimax Pikachu, Thunderbolt will also make G-Max Volt Crash very powerful.

Rise Voltage pairs with Thunderbolt excellent. When Pikachu goes into normal Dynamax form, Max Lightning will launch Electric Terrain. The power of the voltage rise actually doubles on the electric field. This would give the Rising Voltage a 140 base power shift which is also amplified because it is an electric type. This is becoming one of the strongest moves on the field, and any Pokemon that finds a way to use this strategy should do so. It is procured by teaching moves on the Armor Island.

Surfing is always fun to throw at Pikachu, but it also has a strategic purpose. A terrestrial-type Pokemon has defeated Pikachu, so a water-type move with an electric mouse makes the world a good place. Surfing is also generally a good move with 90 base powers. This is not the worst option most Pokemon have.

The nasty plot serves as a way to get Pikachu where he can do enough damage to overturn teams. If Pikachu does not have a Light Ball, then Nasty Plot becomes necessary because the only way Pikachu inflicts significant damage. However, even with Light Ball, Pikachu still uses Special Attack reinforcements, because then he could break through a specially defensive Pokemon. If you can take advantage of a nasty plot before using Dynamax, then Pikachu is capable of provoking the wrath of opposing teams.
