Former Southampton striker Kevin Phillips recently talked about how Manchester UnitedTransfer plans could help Harry Maguire.

According to Bild, United want to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, who could leave the Blues with a free transfer. The German has only six months left on his contract, and negotiations with the club have failed so far.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s defense has faced a lot of criticism this season. Much of it is directed towards the club captain Harry Maguire, who was bad in a series of matches this season.

His individual mistakes have led United to concede a number of goals, especially against Leicester City and Liverpool.

Expert Kevin Phillips believes rumors linking Rudiger to Manchester United could encourage Harry Maguire to work harder for his place on the team. Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said:

“Rudiger would be a serious competition. I think Maguire would solve it without any problems. A player of Rudiger’s caliber could actually help Maguire. It could improve his game and get the best out of him.

“It would be a great statement if United brought in another center-half like Rudiger. The pressure would surely be on Maguire if that happened.”

He also stressed the importance of competing in big clubs like Manchester United, adding:

“Still, you want to compete for places at a club like Manchester United. That’s how you get the best out of a player from week to week. It wasn’t a great season for Maguire, but he’s a quality player.”

Manchester United’s defensive problems this season do not end with Harry Maguire

Manchester United have signed a star defender Raphael Varane from Real Madrid this season. He was seen as a defensive partner with Harry Maguire and a replacement for Victor Lindelof.

However, the Frenchman managed to record only nine appearances this season in all competitions. Due to injuries, he had to spend most of his time.

Meanwhile, the only other real option for Manchester United central defender is Eric Bailly. Ivory Coast has impressed whenever he has played, but has yet to reach the coach’s starting lineup.

Harry Maguire made several mistakes, but under interim manager Ralph Rangnick, he looked like a better player.

Fighting in many different competitions, Manchester United would like to have more options to lead their defense.

So signing with Antonio Rudiger would not only be an incentive for Maguire to play well, but it would also give United the team depth the top club needs.
