Emmy-winning actor Damian Lewis ended his five-season career in the season finale “No Direction Home” on Sunday night, with his character, hedge fund assistant Bobby “Ax.” Axelrod, leaving New York for good to escape his legal troubles.

Following the broadcast of the final episode, Showtime announced that the sixth season of the show will premiere on Sunday, January 23rd.

Lewis, 50, had played billionaire Axelrod on the Showtime series since its inception in 2016.

“What an incredible joy to spend five years working so closely with the great @lewis_damian!” said showrunner Brian Koppelman Twitter. “(Co-creator) @DavidLevien and I are very grateful to you, Damian, for the work, of course, and the fellowship, and for all you have sacrificed to come and do it with us.”
In April this year, Lewis experienced a personal tragedy when his wife, the British actress Helen McCrory, died of cancer.

“Maybe I get a chance to come back,” Lewis told the New York Times Sunday. “But for now, broadly speaking, Ax has been defeated.”

The 90-second trailer showed that while the series will take a different direction after Lewis ’departure, there will continue to be changes in alliances and unscrupulous behavior.

Billionaire Mike Prince, played by Corey Stoll, will be in the top spot in season 6, alongside Daniel Breaker’s intriguing character, Scooter, after being introduced in season 5 as a fierce rival against Ax.

The breakthrough confirms that while Prince is now big and responsible, he is not free from the legal reach of New York Attorney General Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti).

Rhoades tells his father at the beginning of the trailer, “This is the first battle of the new war I’m waging against the rich criminally.”
