A senior Catholic cleric in the United States resigned Tuesday after an investigative report made bombshell sexual allegations against the religious leader.

Jeffrey Burrill served as U.S. Conference general secretary of Catholic Bishops until The Column, a Catholic news outlet, shared what it described as “evidence of a pattern of misconduct on Burrill’s sexual side” with the USCCB. He is also a pari of the Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

By using the “commercially available app signal data records” from Grindr – a location -based social network “for gay, bi, trans, and poor people,” according to its website – Pilar said Burrill learned that “visiting gay bars and private residences … in many cities from 2018 to 2020, even while traveling on dedication for the U.S. bishops ’conference.”

Burrill’s phone was “playing [Grindr] app data signal ”both at his USCCB office and the USCCB-owned residence, according to the report.

The data gathered also suggested that Burrill may have involved himself in “series and illicit sexual activity,” Pillar said, adding that on the day the scandal involving then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick was exposed in 2018 , “the mobile device was linked to Burrill issued hookup app signals at the USCCB staff residence, and from a street to a Washington residence. He traveled to Las Vegas shortly after.”

A few days later, the device registered with Grindr “emitted signals from Entourage, which pays as Las Vegas’ “bathhouse,” The Pillar reported.

McCarrick is an influential clergyman in the United States already stripped his paper to Pope Francis ’Catholic Church in 2019 after a Vatican investigation revealed he was committing sexual abuse even against minors.

The scandal first received public attention on June 20, 2018, after the New York Archdiocese deemed “credible and substantiated” an accusation that McCarrick had slandered a minor.

The USCCB addressed the Burrill report on Tuesday News release.

“On Monday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops was aware of upcoming media reports alleging possible misconduct by its secretary general, Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill,” it said.

Burrill resigned “to avoid becoming a disruption to the operation and ongoing work of the Conference,” the USCCB said.

According to a copy of a memo to U.S. bishops from the president of the USCCB, Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, quoted by National Catholic Reporter Christopher White, “What was shared with us did not include allegations of misconduct in minors. “

A group of bishops elected Burrill to his role as general secretary in 2020.

“The USCCB Secretary -General coordinates all Conference administrative matters and is responsible for coordinating the work of the Conference Committees and staff. He also directs and coordinates the planning and operational activities of the various secretary and office in support of the work of the Conference, ”USCCB website says.

As a Catholic priest, Burrill was expected to maintain celibacy. He also expects to stay away from sexual immorality, which is included homosexuality. All of the Abrahamic faiths see homosexuality as an abomination.

“The Conference takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and will take all appropriate steps to address them,” the USCCB said in the news release.
