Twitter reacts as Manchester United climb to second place in the Premier League with 1-0 win against West Ham

David Moyes ’return to Old Trafford ended with a bitter note Manchester United defeated him West Ham United 1-0 thanks to Craig Dawson’s own goal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had limited options amid numerous injuries on the pitch, including Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial. Mason Greenwood was chosen to lead the line while being reinforced with them in a timely manner Marcus Rashfordreturn to fitness.

The first half was almost completely dominated by the hosts who managed to play most of the 45 minutes in the West Ham half. David Moyes ’men barely managed to get out of their half because the Red Devils had nailed them and they failed in no attempt of any nature, let alone in one goal.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford were guilty of missing opportunities with gilded edges to bring Manchester United into the lead, and Lukasz Fabianski needed to be the sharpest to be able to repel the former with a brilliant defense. The outstretched hand of the Poles prevented Greenwood’s effort on the pole.

The other half had a completely different complexion and was a much more fun watch. Manchester United’s pressure finally paid off as Scott McTominay’s deflected strike broke out of the deadlock in the 53rd minute. Craig Dawson eventually considered the goal an own goal.

West Ham then began to show a much bigger purpose, entering Manchester United territory. Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio were given several half-decent chances, but the home side’s defense, led by Harry Maguire who was great that night, didn’t take the captives and keep the Hammers at bay.

They could have doubled the lead late in the second half with a great counter-attack led by Greenwood and Rashford, but the teen strike once again hits the post.

The win brought Manchester United back over Leicester City to second place and they found themselves 14 points behind Manchester City with a game in hand. West Ham, on the other hand, did not take the opportunity to equalize points with Chelsea and remain in fifth place.

Solskjaer are now preparing their men for the mid-week at the San Siro to draw the UEFA Europa League, after which they travel to Leicester City for the FA Cup quarter-finals.
