Real Madrid are now traveling to England to play Liverpool in the rematch of their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday. Zidane’s men lead in a 3-1 draw, thanks to a handsome win at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano on Tuesday.
The victory over rival rival Barcelona left Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, tied in points with second-placed Atletico Madrid, who have an away match.
“It doesn’t change anything, there’s still a long way to go. We have to rest after today. It’s been two exhausting games,” Zidane told a post-match conference.
Further revealing the physical condition of his players after the test drive, Zidane said:
“Now we have to rest. I don’t know how we’re going to end the season. We’re physically on the border.”
The Real Madrid manager has also addressed a host of changes in playing XI for El Clasico.
“I’m happy for the players. We made a lot of changes today. Mariano, [Alvaro] Odriozola, Isco, Marcelo. Everyone is committed. Everyone wants to play. That’s good on this team. We are all together. I am responsible, but I am happy for them [the players]. We won together, “Zidane added.
The referee did not give a penalty because he was not there: Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane
Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite was knocked down by a challenge from Ferland Mendy in the 84th minute of El Clasico with Real Madrid leading 2-1. But the referee rejected the calls for a penalty, as well as the VAR.
Addressing a controversial moment in the match, Zidane said:
“Everyone has their feelings. I think if the referee didn’t give a penalty, it’s because it’s not a penalty. What matters is what we did on the pitch today. We suffered because Barcelona is a great team. I can’t say it was a referee [who decided the game]. “
With eight remaining matches in the league, Real Madrid is in a three-way battle for the La Liga title. While Atletico Madrid has as many points as rivals from crossstown, Barcelona is third with one point less. Diego Simeone’s team, however, has a match over Real Madrid and Barcelona.
