Warren Deems Senate Filibuster Racist

Amid calls for the Senate to remove the filibuster so that Democrats can pass their legislative agenda, some argue that it is rooted in racism.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) exploded the filibuster in his argument created it to keep Jim Crow’s laws.

He said Axios that the impediment to the procedure, which requires that a majority of the law require 60 votes to pass “is deeply rooted in racism, and it should not be allowed to serve that function, or to create a veto for the minority .In a democracy, rule the majority. “

“When they didn’t want a simple majority, for example, on an impeachment, they specifically said so,” he continued. “The filibuster was a later creation designed to give the South the ability to veto any effective civil rights law or anti-lynching law.”

The Senate website descriptive the filibuster as “a loosely defined term for action designed to prolong debate and delay or prevent a vote on a bill, resolution, amendment, or other controversial question.

Warren is not alone in calling the filibuster racist, and in a column in The Atlantic, David Litt argued that it was a “remnant of the Jim Crow era.”

“The Senate filibuster – the policy that allows a minority of senators to block almost every piece of legislation – may have no literal weight of stone or metal. But it, too, is a direct legacy of segregation, and it remains a “tool for perpetuating systematic racism. In this moment of long reckoning, it is time for the filibuster to go,” he explained.

However, Head of the Senate Minority Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) argued that the procedure is “not broken, and it does not need to be repaired.”

He noted that Democrats used the filibuster to block a police reform bill made by Sen. Tim Scott (RS.C.) and other legislation during former President Donald Trump’s time in office.

“I didn’t respond there by saying, ‘Okay, we’re going to change the Senate rules to get to us. It’s not broken, and there’s no need to fix it. It’s a solution to finding a problem. It’s not a problem that the Senate stopped the bad ideas or negotiated solutions with two parties, “he added.
