A Guide to Colombo, Sri Lanka
Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka, and one of the most important cities in the island. It is also the judicial and administrative capital of the country, and is a significant tourist destination. The city is also the economic and financial centre of the country.
Geographical location
Colomio has been a go to spot for Westerners since the days of yore. In recent years, the city has grown in both population and GDP. It is also the country’s financial capital and the gateway to the island’s lush interior. The city is also home to the world renowned Buddhist temples of Kandy and Sigiriya. A visit to the island isn’t complete without a stop at one of the city’s many hawker centers, where tourists can sample Sri Lankan cuisine and shop for locally made jewelry, art and clothing.
Administrative capital
Colombo is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka. It is a lively and bustling city, filled with many historical and modern buildings. The name “Colombo” comes from the Sinhala language kollmb, meaning “port of Kolomtota”.
The city is home to many government offices, museums and historical landmarks. The city is located on the west coast of the island. As a result, it enjoys a fairly temperate climate. Most of Sri Lanka’s foreign trade and commerce is conducted from this city.
The city is also home to one of the world’s largest artificial harbours. This, together with Colombo’s excellent infrastructure, makes it an ideal location for foreign investment.
Airport
Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport is located 32 kilometers from the city of Colombo. There are two commercial terminals and a cargo terminal. The airport is also a training facility for international corporate jets.
In addition to the two terminals, there are several shops, restaurants, and eateries. These services are available 24 hours. Some of the eateries are Pizza Hut and S.V.H. Snacks.
For car hire services, Europcar and Avis are both available in the Arrivals Halls. A shuttle bus service is also available. Several taxi operators are stationed outside the arrivals area.
Air quality
Air quality in Colombo has been deteriorating in recent days. The city was recorded to have an unhealthy level of air pollution at 8.30am today. This was only a slight improvement from yesterday’s unhealthy readings.
Air quality in Colombo is also affected by other factors such as the weather, vehicle emissions, and burning of solid waste in homes. These factors contribute to a large amount of the air pollution in the city.
The most significant improvement in air quality in Colombo was observed during rush hour traffic. This was due to a movement restriction which blocked the spread of COVID-19.
Radio stations
There are more than 20 FM radio stations broadcasting in Colombo. These include the local behemoths such as Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) and state owned outlets such as the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and the Sri Lanka Television Corporation. The most notable amongst them is the SLBC, which operates the nation’s only medium wave station at Puttalam. Using frequencies of 873 and 882 kHz, the station carries Colombo Radio International in Tamil from 01:30 to 0230.
While the above mentioned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation is the monopoly kingpin, private FM operators have been permitted to operate since the early 1990s. This is a great thing, given the sheer number of listeners in this neck of the woods.
