Alyssa’s Birthday: A Retrospective

Tomorrow is my sister Alyssa’s birthday. She’s the middle child, and as such, we’ve always made a bit of a fuss over her birthdays. This year is no different—she’s turning 30, so we’re going all out. In honor of the occasion, I thought I’d take a look back at some of my favorite memories of Alyssa over the years.

My earliest memory of Alyssa is from when she was just a baby. We were at the park, and she was sitting in her stroller, smiling up at me. I must have been three or four years old at the time, and I remember thinking how happy she looked.

It was such a contrast to the way I felt—I was going through a phase where I was scared of pretty much everything, and I envied her ability to just be content in the moment. That feeling has stayed with me; even now, as an adult, she has this calmness about her that I can’t help but be drawn to.

One of my favorite birthday memories is from when Alyssa turned 10. We had a birthday party for her at our house, and she invited some of her friends from school. I don’t think I realized it at the time, but looking back, it was clear that she was starting to come in to her own as a person.

She was catching songs on the radio and singing along with the lyrics, something she would never have done before. And she just seemed so confident—not like a little girl pretending to be grown-up, but like someone who was actually growing up. It was amazing to watch.

These days, Alyssa is settled down with her husband and two kids. She’s still got that same calmness about her, but now it’s mixed with this paternal instinct that makes me want to be a better person. She’s always been there for me when I needed someone to talk to, and she’s never judged me for any of the mistakes I’ve made—of which there are many.

I feel incredibly lucky to have her as my sister, and I’m so excited to see what the next 30 years have in store for her.

Alyssa is one of the most important people in my life, and tomorrow is her 30th birthday. In honor of the occasion, I wanted to share some of my favorite memories of her over the years.

From being content in the moment as a baby to coming into her own as a 10-year-old to being an amazing mother and wife today, Alyssa has always been an inspiration to me. Here’s hoping that the next 30 years are even half as good as the first 30 have been!
